Two Views

Sigmund Freud and BF Skinner, both believed that society had a civilizing affect on man, and that he was basically bad and animalistic if left to his own devices. They were both right, as for a large segment of society rules and laws prevent people from doing the wrong thing, and define their values and what is expected of them.

Abraham Maslow and Carl Jung, both believed that society had a harmful affect on man, and that he was intended to grow and develop throughout his life, absent the contrivances of conformity. They were both right, as but a small segment of society chooses to retain their own sense of identity, and through their integrity and creativity help to change the world.
